Museum of Contemporary Art in Rome

Macro is a unique exhibition space reserved for contemporary art pieces. Special attention is dedicated to a dynamic balance between the visitors, the museum and the city.

The creation of MACRO began with the restoration of the old block of one Italian brewery, built in the early 20th century. Once the six exhibition rooms were ready, the museum was open to public in 2002. However, in 2004, a famous French architect Odile Decq was in charge of expanding the exhibition space of MACRO. A new wing of the building was opened with the aim of offering a dynamic balance between the museum and the city, with the accent on interaction between visitors and the museum.
New exhibition and urban spaces were created, such as a terrace, a restaurant and a library.

The permanent collection includes over 600 art pieces, mainly from the Italian art scene from the second part of the 20th century (Carla Accardi, Antonio Sanfilippo, Piero Dorazio, Leoncilio and Ettore Colla – the group Forma1, and many others).
The collection also includes masterpieces of the last generation of artists such as: Giovanni Albanese, Domenico Bianchi, Fabio Mauri etc.
The museum also organizes numerous temporary exhibitions.
