The Doge's Palace

The Doge's Palace

The Doge's Palace or the Providence Palace is situated on the Square of the Arms, the main square in Kotor, which is the first to welcome tourists if they enter the old city through the main city gate. The Doge's Palace is the largest palace in the old town, built in the eighteenth century. It is located along the city walls and occupies the entire western facade of the city. It was called the Doge's Palace because it housed the Venetian Providence. Every city under the Venetian rule had a Doge, who at the time was the "big boss" of the city.

After the fall of the Venetian Republic, the palace was transformed into a barracks. The ground floor served as a room for guards, and warehouses for public use. On the first and second floor there were rooms for the soldiers. The palace balcony is the longest balcony in the Adriatic, 55 meters long overlooking the main city square. Today, this palace is a luxury Cattaro hotel, which means, in Italian, Kotor. On the ground floor of the palace there are cafes.
