Brancaleone Fortress in Ravenna

Brancaleone Fortress in Ravenna

This fortress is a great example of more modern architectural additions to Ravenna. Unlike most important tourist attractions of Ravenna, this fortress was built much later, in the 15th century, by the Venetian Republic (ruling in Ravenna at that time). It is a great chance for a break and a bit of sightseeing.

The construction of Ravenna Fortress started in 1457 and lasted for almost 10 years. It was constructed by the Venetian Republic which ruled over Ravenna from 1441 to 1509 and again from 1527 to 1530. The plan of the republic was to affirm its presence in the city and reinforce the existing defensive structures. The fortress had a defensive purpose in case of a siege of the city, but was also designed to withstand possible rebellions within the city of Ravenna.
The fortress was made up of two sections. The first section was heavily fortified with four towers connected by a thick wall. This smaller section of the fortress was designed to withstand any attack from the outside and protect the only access to the fortress, a drawbridge over a moat filled with water. The other, larger section of the fortress was designed to hold the garrison of Venetian troops, stock arms, food etc.
There are many theories how this fortress got its name. Most probably, the construction of the fortress was seen as an act of showing off power and supremacy by the Venetian Republic and since the main symbol of the Venetian Republic was a lion, people started calling it Branca (claw, paw) Leone (lion).

Today the interior of the fortress is a public park that offers a nice chance for a walk and a cup of coffee, with a small area dedicated to children.
