History

History of Crete
Ancient Crete is the place where the Minoan civilization originated, one of the most important world civilizations (2600-1150 BC). Huge palace states were built, such as the famous palaces of Knossos, Phaestos and Zakros, and the Minoans established a strong naval empire in the Mediterranean. This great civilization was stopped by a natural disaster: huge waves caused by the eruption of the volcano Santorini in 1450 BC covered the northern shores of Crete with lava ash. After the invasion of the Achaeans and Dorians, a tribe from northern Europe, the Minoan civilization never came to life. The architecture of ancient sites and temples proves the richness of the island since ancient times.
