The first settlements in Barcelona date from the Neolithic period. The city itself was founded by the Romans who founded a colony called Barcino at the end of the 1st century BC. For more than 200 years, Barcelona was under Muslim rule, and after later Christian campaigns, it became a county of the Carolingian Empire.
