Neue Pinakothek or the New Pinakothek is a museum of contemporary art, opened in Munich in 2002. The exhibition area takes up 22,000 m2, making this gallery one of the largest in the world. The museum exhibits works of art from the 10th and 11th century.
The museum building is the work of a German architect Stefan Braunfels. Although the building layout was completed in 1990, the museum was opened only in 2002 due to a number of delays in construction process. In fact, there were many complaints about the appearance of the building, as well as the expenditure in construction, the estimates of which totalled at approximately 120 million euros.
The permanent collection consists of art pieces from the 20th century that were collected from the Munich House of Art (Haus der Kunst) to name but one. The collection has been expanded since 1945 not only through private donations but also by collecting the art pieces that back in the day the Nazis persecuted because they were considered "impure."
In this day and age, invaluable masterpieces of the world most famous representatives of contemporary art such as Pablo Picasso, Franc Mark, Wassily Kandinsky, Andy Warhol, Hati Matis, Salvador Dali and many others are on display in the museum.
The collection is further enriched with art works of applied art and design, which altogether amounts to 70,000 items. Amongst the more significant ones, there are legendary models of cars, old-timers, which have been discontinued, engines, furniture as well as typing equipment from the last century.
The museum also has a jewelry exhibition as part of the permanent collection. There are exhibits here that represent the finest works of art of more than 100 international goldsmiths.
The museum also has a picture perfect garden, located on the ground floor, where visitors can have a cup of coffee and thoroughly enjoy Munich.
