The access to the archaeological remains of Santa Reparata is situated on the second span of the south nave of Santa Maria del Fiore, the Florentine Cathedral. Santa Reparata was among the greatest Paleo-Christian complexes of Tuscia, and its importance is even more pronounced by its location in front of the Florence Baptistery. The site was characterized by three naves, with the colonnades delimiting the central nave and a fence separating the apse-choir and the public cult area of the church. The construction seems to originate from the times of Christian victory over Radagasio, King of the Goths, in 405.
Visitors can see the remains of the Roman buildings, on the top of which the basilica was built in the 5th century, part of the Early Christian poly-chrome mosaic floor with geometric decorations and segments of the later extensions of the church until the second half of the 14th century, when the old church was replaced by Santa Maria del Fiore. The crypt also exhibits some items such as tombstones. Among these, the stunningly beautiful Lando di Giano, chaplain of Santa Reparata, who died in 1353, then that of Niccolò Squarcialupi from 1313, that of Giovanni Di Alamanno de'Medici, who died in 1352, and perhaps, but it is still not certain, even the tombs of two Popes: Stephen IX and perhaps Niccolò II, the former Bishop of Florence in 1058. During the excavation campaign the tomb of Filippo Brunelleschi was also found, while there are no traces of those of Giotto, Arnolfo di Cambio, Andrea Pisano, who according to what a number of sources suggest were buried here.
