Japan is an archipelago or series of islands located at the eastern end of Asia. There are four main islands: Kuyushu, Shikoku, Honshu and Hokkaido. Japan has almost 4,000 smaller islands. Japan's mainland neighbors are Russia's Siberian region in the north and South Korea and China.Honshu is the largest of the four islands, followed by Hokkaido, Kyushu and Shikoku. The capital of Japan is Tokyo, located in the eastern central part of the island of Honshu, and for decades it has been the most populous capital in the world.
Nearly four-fifths of Japan is covered in mountains. The Japanese Alps descend in the center of the largest island of Honshu. The highest peak is Mount Fuji, a cone-shaped volcano that many Japanese consider sacred. Japan is hit by more than a thousand earthquakes a year. Japan also has about 200 volcanoes, 60 of which are active. The Japanese are known for their amazing work ethic. Japanese food is very different from food in Western countries. A much healthier diet is used, which is why Japan is the longest-lived nation in the world. The Japanese eat a lot of rice, fish and vegetables, and very little meat. It is for this reason that the Japanese are very young.
