The Museum of Archeology

The Museum of Archeology

The Museum of Archeology in Budva is situated in the city’s historical district, in a house built in the 19th century. The museum houses permanent exhibitions of artifacts from its archeological and ethnographical collections, as well as a lapidarium in the building’s ground floor. The artefacts displayed were found during archeological excavations in Budva, objects like vases, jewelry, gold dating back to ancient times, cutlery, clay objects, as well as silver jewelry make this museum’s collection a sight to behold. The objects displayed date back to a period between the 5th century BC and the end of the Middle Ages, exemplifying Illyrian, Greek, Byzantine, as well as Slavic cultures and art. This exhibition displays the craftsmanship of Budva’s earliest inhabitants, but also the skill of the first inhabitants of the whole Balkan region.

However, among the artifacts displayed at the museum, a pair of gold earrings and an broche depicting a boy being held in the claws of an eagle attract the most attention. The broche is often connected to the myth of Zeus and Ganymede. One of the three sons of the founder of Troy, Ganymede was kidnapped by the gods and would become Zeus’ cup-bearer. The image depicted on the broche symbolizes love towards all boys.
Budva’s museum is home to a rich and divers collection whose history reaches back 2500 years in the past, a truly marvelous archeological and ethnological collection.
