Convent of St Agnes of Bohemia

Convent of St Agnes of Bohemia

In the convent of St Agnes of Bohemia visitors may enjoy both permanent and temporary exhibitions in a beautiful monastery complex. The permanent exhibition is devoted to medieval art, mostly with religious motifs, while the temporary ones will have different themes. Even those that have little interest in religious art may find this huge exhibition area and its content very interesting.

Convent of St Agnes of Bohemia is just one of the exhibition areas that belong to the National Gallery of Prague.  In the convent of St Agnes, both temporary and permanent exhibitions are held.
The convent of St Agnes of Bohemia was most probably founded by St Agnes of Bohemia in 1231.

Permanent exhibition (Medieval Art in Bohemia and Central Europe)
The first part of this exhibition is dedicated to the development of art in Bohemia of mid-14th century. In this period, Bohemia and Prague were important European art centers. In the 15th and 16th century, the tides changed and from being important artistic centers Bohemian cities were more influenced by the works of Central European countries. Both the domestic works of art from this period and those from the Central European countries (with which Bohemia had close ties) are exhibited in the second part of the exhibition.
Temporary exhibitions
Temporary exhibitions with various themes are organized every several months. In order to check what is on right now, visit the website of the National Galley.

Interesting facts

  • Agnes of Bohemia, or Agnes of Prague, was a medieval princess (daughter of King Ottokar I of Bohemia) that refused the life of a princess and with the help of the Pope started a life of a nun. Although she was much respected even after her death, she was not canonized for another 700 years.
