The Gallery of Italy in Milan

Beautiful Gallery of Italy is located in the center of Milan, on the famous alla Scala city square. Here, visitors will have a chance to enjoy art pieces from the nineteenth and twentieth century which compose the permanent exhibition of the gallery, as well as frequently organized temporary exhibitions.

The magnificent Milan’s Gallery (there are three Galleries of Italy in: Milan, Vicenza and Naples) is a unique art gallery that will leave no one indifferent. It is located in the city center, right next to the Theater alla Scala, in the historical buildings of Milan designed by the most important architects between the 18th and 20th century. The facade of the Gallery that faces the Scala square was in fact The Commercial Bank of Italy (you will find this name on the building even today – so do not be confused), that together with other two buildings (Anguissola and Brentani) forms the space of the gallery where sculptures and paintings from the 19th and 20th century are exposed.

The nineteenth century collection
This is no ordinary visit but a journey through a century of Italian art that starts with 13 bas-reliefs by Antonio Canova, the genius of Neoclassicism, to masterpieces of Umberto Boccioni that document the fundamental shift from Divisionism to Futurism. Even though the main protagonists of the exhibition are the Lombard paintings from the 19th century, you will not feel a lack of other magnificent works of art from other geographical areas, such as: “The two Foscari “ by Francesco Hayes , “La Leçon de Chant” (The singing Lesson) by Federico Zandomeneghi,” Unable to Wait” by Telemaco Signorini, ”Portrait of Fattori in his Studio” by Giovanni Boldini, “Confession” by Giuseppe Molteni,” The Battle of Cernaja” by Gerolamo Induno, “Interior of Milan Cathedral” by Angelo Inganni ect.
The twentieth century collection
The exhibition gives a historical and critical overview through 189 works of art, illustrating the most representative artists and trends of the second half of the 20th century, a highly productive period for the Italian art. The collection includes several artistic periods – Art Informel, Nuclear Art, MAC Concrete Art movement, Kinetic and Progammed Art, The Poor Art, Concepltual Art and Italian Pop Art, and their most significant representatives – Lucio Fontana, Bruno Munari, Piero Manzoni, Enrico Castellani, Emilio Vedova, Alighiero Boetti, Alberto Burri ect.
