The Chapel of Vidovdan Heroes (The Chapel of Saint Archangels of George and Gabriel) became a tourist attraction in 2014 on the centenary of "Sarajevo Assassination". On the Orthodox holiday Vidovdan, on 28 June 1914, Crown Prince Ferdinand and his wife Sofia were killed in Sarajevo. The assassination was carried out by Gavrilo Princip with the help of the members of the „Young Bosnia“ movement, as a symbol of resistance to the Austrian occupier. All members of the movement were convicted, then imprisoned for life.
The assassination of Crown Prince Ferdinand is considered a historic turning point and the cause for the World War I. As the assassination took place on Vidovdan, the participants in the assassination were called "Vidovdan Heroes".
The Chapel of Vidovdan Heroes was built in 1939 at the Orthodox Cemetery in Kosevo (Sarajevo). The project was led by architect Alexander Deroko. The chapel was built in the Byzantine style and was conceived as a common tomb. The remains of the assassins were transferred and buried in a common tomb in 1920, and 19 years later they were placed in front of the newly built chapel.
On the entrance of the Chapel you will see written the names of the heroes of Vidovdan:
