The Ilha Fiscal island

The Ilha Fiscal island

Ilha Fiscal is the name of the island and the plateau located on it. The offices of the Guarda Fiscal (i.e. tax inspections and customs) of the then capital of the Empire in the 12th century used to be located here. Located in the Bay of Guanabara, Ilha Fiscal is an island used by the local government as offices of the Brazilian customs authorities. The building was designed by Pedro the Second, who commissioned his engineer Adolf José del Vecchio to create the project. The palace was built in the Gothic Provencal style, and was ceremoniously opened on April 27, 1889, at a ceremony attended by the king, his entourage and numerous diplomats.
