The Rio–Niterói Bridge

The Rio–Niterói Bridge

Rio-Niterói Bridge - There are different ways to visit Niterói, and one of the most commonly used is crossing the Rio-Niterói Bridge. The Brazilian government first discussed connecting Rio with Niterói in 1875, but the project was developed 90 years later. Construction of the bridge began in 1968 and was completed in 1974.

The bridge was originally named after President Costa e Silva, who approved the project. However, people soon started calling it Rio-Niterói. The Rio-Niterói Bridge is the longest bridge in the southern hemisphere. It is about 14 km long. It is the sixth longest bridge in the world. The central span of the bridge is 72 meters, which enabled the passage of hundreds of ships that enter and exit, leaving the bay every month.

Out of 343.353 m² of the total built area, 320.796 m² are on concrete viaducts (of which 210.605 m² are on prefabricated viaducts), and 22.557 m² are on the steel viaduct. Access ramps on the Niterói side consist of ramps and eight viaducts with a total area of 22.560 m2

The bridge is really impressive and it would be a shame not to see it.
