Rio de Janeiro:

The Botanical Garden

The Botanical Garden

The Botanical Garden contains over 6.500 different species of Brazilian and foreign plants. Here are even plants that are endangered in Brazil itself. The rich biodiversity is spread over 1.5 km2 of the park and allows visitors to get to know some of the most exotic plants that grow in Brazil, making this attraction in Rio unavoidable. The Botanical Garden was founded by D. João VI in 1808. With a total area of 137 hectares, the Botanical Garden contains rare collections of bromeliads and orchids, as well as old trees and exotic plants.

The garden also has buildings from the beginning of the 16th century, preserving the historical and cultural heritage. Among the monuments we highlight the portal of the Academy of Fine Arts, designed by Grandjean de Montigny, and the Japanese Garden, created in 1935, by donating 65 species of typical Japanese plants. The park is also an excellent place for bird watching, because more than a hundred different species live in the canopies and trunks of their trees.

One hundred and forty species of birds live in this unique environment, including white-necked toucans. There are also wild monkeys here that visitors can see but are not as friendly as those from Bali. One of the most famous and most photographed areas of the garden is the perfectly structured Avenue of the Royal Palms, a 750-meter trail bordered by 134 palm trees. Magnificent sight.

The research center houses about 32.000 volumes specializing in botany, with 650.000 samples available to the public. There are also various collections that you can look at such as carnivorous plants, cacti, orchids and dried fruits. The photo collection is an exhibition of 12.000 photographs spanning a period of 100 years highlighting different periods and landscapes of the garden, including historical moments such as Albert Einstein’s visit to the park.
