The Old Olive Tree

The Old Olive Tree

This Old Olive tree is the most famous tree in all of Montenegro, and a great tourist attraction at the same time. The tree is one of the oldest in Europe, as well as the whole world, and has been under protection of the law since 1957, when it was declared a natural monument. In its 2000 year-old life span, the olive tree suffered fires twice, managing to recover each time, and it still bears fruit today.

The olives harvested from the tree are used to make healing olive oil. Olive oil from Bar is considered to be of great quality. The Old Olive Tree is located in Mirovica, just next to the Bar-Ucinj highway, and is surrounded by 7 olive trees ranging in age between 500 and 700 years.

According to a legend, this tree was used as a means of calming down of blood feuds when this phenomenon was plentiful in Montenegro, as well as being the place where families, brotherhoods and armies came to settle their differences.

During the rule of King Nikola, if any man from Bar wanted to get married, he had to plant 20 olive trees. Today, there are around 40 000 olive trees in the Bar area.

The entrance fee for the Old Olive park costs €1.
