Palaces of Kotor

The Kotor palaces are closed for visits, but from the outside each of these palaces are true asterpiece.Palaces were built with much love, each palace at the entrance has the coat of arms of the noble family to which it belonged, as well as a story that is not forgotten. Much of the preserved furniture, paintings, portraits, jewelry, clothing and weapons found in the palaces can now be seen at the Maritime Museum of the City of Kotor.


The Vrakjen Palace

The Vrakjen Palace

The VRAKJEN PALACE is located on Kotor square of Salad, but the locals also call it Scala Santa (Holy Staircase). It belonged to the noble Vrakjen family. The palace completely preserved the authentic interior appearance from the seventeenth-century. The palace is unusual because it is the only one in Kotor with a red facade. Above the main entrance is a family coat of arms in the middle of which is a crow bird. This is the only palace in Kotor to have its own chapel, in which this family is most likely buried. There are not much information about this family.

The Grgurina Palace

The GRGURINA PALACE is located on the square of the Museum, the Navy Square or ,how the locals call it, the Circus Square. The palace was built in the seventeenth century and belonged to the Grgurina family, which came to Kotor from the Istrian peninsula. The owner of the palace was the merchant Marko Grgurina, who brought the Venetian sculptor Francesco Cabianca to Kotor in 1704, and was responsible for the interior of the reliquary in the cathedral of St Tripun.

The Palace Grubonja

The Palace Grubonja

GRUBONJA PALACE is located near the northern city gate, more precisely at the entrance to the fortress of San Giovanni, behind the church of St Ozana. It is known that the Grubonja family moved to Kotor from Zadar in the 15th century. In the earthquake in 1979, but also the one earlier in 1667, this palace did not suffer any damage. On the main facade there is an unusual coat of arms, mortuary bones, a skull, snake, turtle and a lizard, which is considered a symbol of the first pharmacy opened in Kotor in 1326.
