Portal de l’Angel is a pedestrian zone near Catalunya Square. It is known as one of the most famous shopping areas, and it is one of the most crowded streets in the city. In addition to that, Portal de l’Angel symbolizes luxury, high prices, and respectable style. El Corte Ingles shopping center, tourists’ and locals’ favourite, is located there. It houses indispensable brands such as Zara, H&M, Mango, Disney shops, and Benetton.
Not only that shopping will become a pure pleasure, but you will also enjoy good food, traditional sweets and ice cream – something you should not miss, too. You can always sit near the oldest fountain in Barcelona to relax, and drink in the beauty and liveliness of the city.
Portal de l’Angle was beyond the Roman city walls in the Middle Ages, and the very pedestrian zone was a creek bed. It is interesting how the street got its name. The legend says that an angel addressed the citizens with a message to protect the city when a plague was wreaking havoc back in 1419. It is believed that the said angel was San Vincent Ferrer. After the plague began to die down, the angel’s statue was erected and the street was named after him
