Today, the Gran Canaria island can offer tourist a lot of things. There is a lot to discover wherever you decide to explore, be it north, south, east or west. It doesn’t matter whether you are travelling with your significant other, with friends or if you are going on a family vacation, Gran Canaria will provide everything you need for an unforgettable and exciting vacation. The south is the most popular part of the island, and there you can see the beautiful fisherman communities such as Puerto Mogán (a picturesque village also known as Little Venice), Puerto Rico, Maspalomas, Meloneras, San Augustín, as well as the famous Playa del Inglés. But don’t let the spectacular landscapes and views distract you from the hilly north and west coasts, or the inland area, where many protected areas and natural parks are situated.
This cathedral is the main cathedral of the city of Las Palmas, but also of the whole island of Gran Canaria. It is situated in in the heart of the historical part of town, also called Vegueta. The construction of the cathedral began in 1500, during the term of bishop Diego de Muros, but the construction was halted in 1557 due to financial difficulties. Only in 1781 was the construction resumed, and is still going on to this day. It is because of this pause in construction that the cathedral is built in two architectural styles: the interior is characteristic for its late Gothic period art, but the exterior is being built in a more Neoclassical mood
Translated as “The Fallen Cliff and the Sacred Mountains”, this site is an archeological locality comprised of caves, temples and wheat barns which once belonged to the indigenous people of the Canary Islands before the invasion of Spanish conquerors. The location was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2019. Debates have started after several scientists stated that the location was used by the indigenous people for astronomical observations, but several mathematicians have their doubts, saying that there is not enough evidence to prove these claims.
Translated as “The Boulder among the Clouds”, this volcanic rock formation is located at the very center of the island of Gran Canaria. The rock is located in the rural park spreading over an area of 263.074km2. The Roque Nublo was created around 4.5 million years ago thanks to a volcanic eruption. It is 76 meters high, and is located at a height of 1813m. On the rock itself, there is a natural tower that is 60-meters high, formed as a result of the breaking off of large parts of the rock, and from afar, it resembles a human finger pointed at the sky.
The Pico de las Nieves is the second-highest peak of Gran Canaria. It is volcanic in origin, peaking at 1949 meters. Once you climb this amazing peak, you will witness a vast area covered with pine trees. Although the Pico de las Nieves is a popular tourist destination for thousands of tourists visiting the island every year, the highest peak is actually Morro de la Agujereada, peaking at 1956 meters, and the two peaks are next to one another. The name is translated as “the snow peaks”, which comes from the fact that there are several covered holes (“neveras” in Spanish) for keeping snow, situated in the mountains themselves.
