Temple Arulmihu Srimuthumariamman Thevasthanam

Hindu Temple Arulmihu Srimuthumariamman Thevasthanam is located near Matale in Sri Lanka. We understand that it might be quite difficult to pronounce the name of this Hindu temple but let’s just start with a brief explanation. The temple is dedicated to Mariamman, the goddess of rain and fertility (word "mari" means rain and "amman" means mother).

The temple was built in 1874. At first this was only a small statue used by the Hindu believers as a place for their prayers. However, the temple was later added on to to be an immense and truly impressive building. The most dominant feature of the temple is 33 meter high tower decorated with over 1000 statues.

Today this temple is used by both Hindus and Buddhists. We would really recommend visiting this temple. Apart from the fact that it is decorated with all manner of vivid colors, one may really feel an inner peace and bliss inside. We had the opportunity to see one of the Hindu religious rituals and hear their authentic music where they impersonate the trumpeting of elephants using a special musical instrument.
