The Sandhamn Island

The Sandhamn Island

Sandhamn island is the main island on Sandön and at the same time it is one of the most important harbours in the archipelago because of the easy access. The island is not rocky, though it has regions with rocky shore – typical of islands in the outer archipelago. However, it also has a beautiful white sand beach – Trouville. It is located on the southern part of the islands, and it takes 20 minutes from the harbour to get there. The road to the beach is suitable for walks.

The island is very crowded during summer, and it is known as the place where sailors gather. There are numerous restaurants, bars, hotels, and the Royal Swedish Yacht Club. There you may also come across many interesting activities. You may swim there, scuba-dive, drive a bicycle or a kayak, or learn how to sail. And for those who love to dance, there are night clubs that are opened the whole night and they offer an amazing experience under the midnight sun. The very settlement on the island does not have many citizens, and the total number of visitors throughout a year is about 100.000.

Sandhamn is the founder of the Round Gotland Race that takes place by the beginning of July, and it is the most prestigious race in the Baltic Sea with around 300 sailboats.

You would want to leave a whole day for visiting, because it will take a 2-hour drive to get from downtown to the island.
