The Brooklyn Bridge is the oldest suspension bridge in the USA. It is 1.825 meters long and it connects Brooklyn and Manhattan over the East River. After getting stuck in ice while sailing on the East River, John Roebling proposed the idea to build a bridge over the river. The construction of this gigantic bridge lasted 14 years. Colonel John Roebling died while the construction works were underway, so he did not get to see his idea becoming true.

The most significant religious building in New York is Saint Patrick’s Cathedral. It follows the Gothic style, and its exterior differs greatly from modern New York architecture. It is the seat of the Archbishop of New York. It follows the Neo-Gothic style which is not characteristic for American churches, but for European. It was designed by James Renwick, and the construction took place in the period from 1858 to 1910, but it was not officially finished until 1979. Pietà, internationally recognized sculpture, is placed in the cathedral.

The Chrysler Building is yet another landmarks of New York, it is often seen in movies, on posters and postcards. It is considered the ‘gentleman’ among New York’s skyscrapers, thus Manhattan could not be imagined without it. When tourists see the building, due the odd tower on the top, they wonder if it is possible to go to the top and enjoy the view, as is the case with other skyscrapers in New York. The building is 319 meters high, and in the period from 1930 to 1931 it used to be the highest building in the world. Even though it officially is not the highest building in the world, it is the highest brick-building with steel foundation.

The Flatiron Building

The Flatiron Building – when translated, ‘flatiron’ means an iron. The building does look well ironed among all other New York’s skyscrapers. It was designed by Daniel Burnham, and it was finished in 1902. The building sprouted during the skyscraper trend, but it was different from anything that had been constructed before. It is famous for its triangular ironed shape. The façade is ‘heavy’ (it is coated with limestone and glazed terracotta), but it is also luxuriously decorated. For more than a hundred years, the Flatrion Building has been an architectural landmark and famous tourist attraction, even though it has always been a private-business space. Amazement and astonishment with its oddness has not paled, so tourists can be seen marveling to the building on daily basis.
