St. Patrick's Cathedral

St. Patrick's Cathedral

The most significant religious building in New York is Saint Patrick’s Cathedral. It follows the Gothic style, and its exterior differs greatly from modern New York architecture. It is the seat of the Archbishop of New York.

It follows the Neo-Gothic style which is not characteristic for American churches, but for European. It was designed by James Renwick, and the construction took place in the period from 1858 to 1910, but it was not officially finished until 1979. Pietà, internationally recognized sculpture, is placed in the cathedral. Cathedral’s interior is beautifully decorated with stained-glass windows that marvelous when the sun shines. The foundation, in the shape of a Latin cross, is 120 meters long and 53 meters wide. The central nave of the cathedral is separated from the two side passages by pointed arches supported by polystyrene columns. Glass-stained windows were made by glaziers from Birmingham, Boston and France. Big window with a rose on the front façade was made by Charles Connick.

The cathedral is a place of gathering for Catholics and the Irish in New York. Saint Patrick’s Day is equally celebrated in both the USA and Ireland, when the whole city is coloured in green, people are dressed in green clothes and celebrate their saint.

Working hours of the cathedral are from 07 am to 8.30 pm, and the entrance to the cathedral is FREE.
