New York City:

The New York City Hall

The New York City Hall

Another must-visit building is New York City Hall, the seat of New York City government.  It is located at the center of City Hall Park in the Civic Center area of Lower Manhattan – it is the oldest City Hall in the USA. It was built in the period from 1803 to 1812. The office of the Mayor of New York City and the chambers of the New York City Council are in this building. Nearby is a building housing staff from other municipal sectors, and it is one of the largest government buildings.

New York City Hall is a National Historic Landmark and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. During construction works, the City Council considered the building ‘too extravagant’ which was why the works were slow. However, the architects McComb and Magnin reduced the building’s size and changed some designs in order to mitigate the situation. The foundation was set in May 1803, and the building was officially opened in 1812. The works were also slowed down by the outbreak of yellow fever at the time.

The building underwent renovations in 2018 – both interior and exterior were redesigned and improved. The costs were $150 million. The building follows two styles – the exterior is in the French Renaissance style, while the interior is in the Georgian Revival style.
