New York City:

The Battery Park

The Battery Park

Another magical sight in New York is Battery Park. It is located in the heart of New York, and it offers great opportunities to take beautiful photos of the city. If you go the park on a sunny day, it will offer you magnificent views of the Statue of Liberty, the harbor, ships, Ellis island and Governors island. The park is equally beautiful during the evening hours as well. You can come here at any time and enjoy relaxing moments. There are many restaurants near the park.

Before the 1980s, Battery Park did not even exist. However, during the construction of the World Trade Center, a patch of lands was turning into a landfill, near the Hudson river. That part became famous as Battery Park City, where business offices and residential buildings were built, but also where the park came to be. During the construction works, this place became one of the favourite housing spots. However, following 9/11, many citizens left the area. The tragic event left a lifelong mark on the area’s residents, but on the whole population as well. Demolished towers will never be forgotten. The price of the buildings surrounding the park took a nose-dive back then, but the situation is different today. Battery Park City has returned its old glory.

Even though this is not one of the main tourist landmarks in New York, mainly because there are mostly skyscrapers, we recommend paying it a visit due to park’s magnificent beauty and decorations. Furthermore, in order to get more familiar with the life of an average New Yorker, it is important to visit the places where people go on daily basis.

Battery Park stretches on 26 hectares on the south of Manhattan. The park contains attractions such as an early 19th century fort named Castle Clinton; multiple monuments; and the SeaGlass Carousel. The Carousel consists of 36 different gigantic fish made of fiberglass. The New York Aquarium used to be located here, so that explains the carousel’s decorations.

The Carousel’s working hours: Sunday – Thursday: 10.00 – 19.00; Friday and Saturday: 10.00 – 20.00. A ticket costs $5.
The park was named after artillery batteries that were built in the late 17th century to protect the settlement behind them.
