Bryant Park is one of the most visited, but also one of the most beautiful parks in New York. This green oasis is located in Manhattan, near Times Square. The park hosts a seasonal "Winter Village" with an ice rink, as well as film screenings in summer. It is a small paradise on Earth. Winter Village is held from October to February, and for the rest of the year, there are beautifully decorated green spaces for relaxing, taking a stroll and recreation.
It stretches on over 39.000 m2 - the eastern half of Bryant Park is occupied by the Main Branch of the New York Public Library, while the western contains lawns, shaded walkways etc. It is surrounded by business offices and represents some sort of a refreshment in this part of New York.
The first park at the site was opened in 1847 and was called Reservoir Square because the New York Crystal Palace was housed there, but it was destroyed in a fire back in 1858. The park was then named after the journalist William Cullen Bryant. It was renovated in the period from 1933 to 1934, a few more renovations followed in years to come, but it got the best redesign by the beginning of the 20th century.
The park is owned by the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation, but Bryant Park is managed by the private not-for-profit organization Bryant Park Corporation, which was founded in 1980. The corporation overlooked renovation works. Furthermore, this is a fine example of a public-private partnership. The New York Public Library is located next to the park and it is a must. There are many stands in the park where you can buy pastry and beautiful areas where you may drink a cup of coffee. The park is magnificently decorated during winter months – it is a real pleasure to go ice skating there.
The park also contains Le Carousel with 14 animal models that resembles French carousels, and it plays French cabaret music. It is open from 11.00 to 20.00. Both children and adults love it. The park is beautifully decorated, and it is a place where you will find peace, but also where you may take a break from the urban lifestyle in New York
