Museum Punta della Dogana

Museum Punta della Dogana

Punta della Dogana is a beautiful building that is used for the temporary exhibitions of the selected contemporary art pieces from the Pinault collection. It is located on the edge of the Canale Grande, therefore it also offers a great view on the center of Venice and the Venetian bay.

Punta della Dogana is a contemporary art gallery in Venice. It organizes temporary exhibitions of selected art pieces from the Pinault Collection. This collection belongs to Francois Pinault, a well-known businessman that started wood business in 1963. Over time, he withdrew from wood business and his company entered fashion industry (becoming the third biggest luxury company in the world) and acquired many other companies. Since Pinault had passion for contemporary art and the means to acquire art pieces, it is considered that his collection is one of the most important collections of contemporary art in the world.
In 2007, Francois Pinault was selected by the city of Venice to undertake the reconstruction of Punta della Dogana in Venice. The reconstruction was finished in 2009 and from that day onwards visitors of this building have been able to enjoy the selected art pieces from the Pinault collection.
Punta della Dogana was once a customs building (“Dogana” means customs in Italian) and it is located just across the Grand Canal from Piazza San Marco. Next to the gallery there is also a famous basilica Santa Maria delle Grazie, so if you decide to visit this gallery be sure not to miss this important basilica. Punta della Dogana is also a unique triangular building usually of interest to architecture lovers. Furthermore, the sharp angle of this triangular building divides two canals: Canale Grande and Giudecca Canal, and from that point tourists can enjoy a great view on the Venetian bay and famous San Marco Square and Palazzo Ducale.
