Rio de Janeiro:

The Corcovado Hill

The Corcovado Hill

Corcovado Hill, or Morro do Corcovado in Portuguese (Morro in Portuguese means “hump”) is a sharp rocky top (704 meters), part of the Carioca chain from where an incredible view of Rio de Janeiro can be seen. Mount Corcovado got its name “hump” because of its shape. There is an impressive statue of Christ the Redeemer at the top of its narrow top. The statue is an incredible 30 meters high and can be seen from all parts of the city. The statue of Christ the Redeemer is the most famous symbol of Rio de Janeiro.

The top of Corcovado and statue of Christ can be accessed by railway, mini buses or vans. There are several options, and each of them runs daily. The railway uses trains with electrically driven gears which can transport 360 passengers per hour. Each trip takes about 20 minutes, and the train leaves every half hour, from 8:30 a.m. to 18:30 p.m. At the base of the statue is a staircase consisting of 222 steps that you can climb by foot to reach the statue of Christ the Redeemer. Also, there are 3 panoramic elevators and 8 escalators. The statue of Christ the Redeemer and Corcovado Hill are visited every year by more than 300.000 visitors who enjoy this unusual and impressive piece constructed in Art Deco style, but also amazing view that extends to the entire city.

From the platform of the statue you can see the city of Rio de Janeiro, lake Rodrigo de Freitas, the beaches of Copacabana and Ipanema, Mario Filho stadium, and many favelas. Corcovado is also very adaptable and there are 54 routes that lead to this hill and exciting attractions.
