It is almost inconceivable that someone can return from their trip to Egypt with empty hands.
But we are always in a dilemma, what should we buy?
Souvenirs
First, we would advise you to visit small craft shops or even small factories that your tour guides can take you to, where you can take a look at hand-crafted objects. You will be surprised by the precision of the details. Here you will be able to choose statuettes and vases mostly made with alabaster, copper, brass and silver. There is a small factory near Luxor where visitors can find all sorts of souvenirs at truly affordable prices and amazing quality.
If you go to the Khalili market in Cairo, you will find a wide selection of jewels made with amber stones. Also, take a look at the Egyptian papyrus, a plant that, when properly treated, is used for making writing material. And it also smells incredible.
Spices of all kinds
Another very original souvenir is a selection of famous Egyptian spices. Visitors won't have to wander around in order to find them, since, being a product commonly used in Egypt, they are easily found in markets and bazaars. Visitors can taste and buy saffron, curry and cinnamon. In fact, the managers of the restaurants often prepare meals cooked with these spices, which visitors can taste on the spot. Visitors can use these spices to recreate tasty dishes with an exotic flavor at home. In addition, the mother-of-pearl box in which retailers pack the purchased spices, makes this gift an original idea that will amaze your loved ones.
Essences and fragrances
The Egyptian civilization was one of the first to use perfumes and essences, probably to ward off the smell of death and preserve, as much as possible, the appearance of a living person or simply to enhance one's senses. The fact is that Egyptians have a real cult for the care of the body with the help of creams, essences and perfumes obtained from spices and herbs. We must say that the papyrus fragrance is our favorite. Furthermore, by using a combination of different scents, such as myrrh, cardamom, rosewood, sandalwood, honey, coriander, cinnamon or papyrus, you can create completely personal essences and fragrance.
Egyptian cloths
Egypt is the home of the sensual belly dance. In addition to attending a belly dancing show, visitors can buy the traditional skirt of the dancers, decorated with many brightly colored gems. The beautiful scarves made of different types of fabrics are great to take home as a unique accessory. In addition to it being an original gift, you can also improve your own outfits with an oriental touch.
Egyptian carpets
Egyptian carpets are well-known (there are three types). The best type is called a mamluk and it is the most traditional carpet. These carpets are famous for their elaborate geometric shapes, but not too eccentric, and for their delicate colors. They are often made with camel wool, but you will almost never find cheap Egyptian carpets. The quality of the carpet depends on the workmanship, but what is certain is that it is a piece of furniture that will always enrich your home.
Shisha
How could we forget the hookah which is also called shisha? It is the classic water pipe that Egyptians love to use. Tourists want to experience this sensation and taste the tobacco that is flavored with various natural essences. You can choose a variety of essences. Visitors can try shisha in many hotels and bars but they can also purchase a hookah at the market, along with flavors and take it home with them.
Camel’s bones
The bones of a camel are usually of good quality. Once the camel dies (by natural death), its bones are processed, engraved and turned into objects such as boxes. These boxes are very nice souvenirs and gifts for family members or friends.
