Kos Municipal market also called Mercato delle Erbe is perhaps one of the best places on the island of Kos to experience local flavors and tastes. It is located in the historic center of the Kos town therefore accessible to all the tourists who come to visit the town.
This market has been designed by the Italian architect Florestano Di Fausto in 1933 during the Italian occupation of the island and after a great earthquake that almost reduced the whole island to rubble. It sits on the main city square called Eleftherias Square (the Square of Freedom) next to the other well-known city attractions like the Archeological Museum of Kos and Mosque Defterdar from the Ottoman period, surrounded by numerous coffee shops and restaurants.
Here one can find the real gastronomical marvels: the local olive oil, krasotiri cheese (cheese aged in red wine), local honey, dry fruit of all sorts, local wines, fresh fruits and vegetables, local cinnamon drink called kanelada and much more.
However, the section with spices is probably the most attractive. Here you will also be able to find all sorts of spices, that are obviously not all grown on the island, but the mere sight of all those colors in combination with an incredible mixture of aromas is definitely something worth seeing.
