Museum of Fine Arts

In the museum of fine arts, there is a permanent and temporary exhibition whose works are known to the whole world. The foundation of the museum is the private collection of the rich Hungarian ESTERHAZI family. There are many different paintings and drawings, which the state of Hungary traded in 1870. The works that make the museum unique are the works of Raphael, Leonardo da Vinci, Titian, Goya. This museum is worth visiting, precisely because of the masterpieces of artists of the 19th and 20th centuries.

The museum was opened in 1906 by the then emperor of Austria-Hungary, Franz Joseph. European fine art is housed in the fine arts museum, and works from the 13th, 14th, 15th, 16th, 17th and 18th centuries can be seen. Paintings and masterpieces of sculpture in various styles are exhibited there.

There are sculptures from Greece and Rome, and artifacts from Egypt. Then fantastic masterpieces by Italian, Spanish and Dutch artists. There is also a large collection of Dutch masterpieces from the 18th century; approx. 500 masterpieces in this museum only.

Many masterpieces from museums of fine arts are strongly desired by the world museums of Europe and America. Because of this, some collections are occasional sent for exchange. The exhibition "Life's work of Van Gogh" was organized in this museum, as well as the exhibition "From Botticelli to Titian", with their masterpieces and many others.

  • In 2020, an exhibition of Japanese engravings that survived the Austro-Hungarian Empire attracted a lot of public attention.
  • Among the Egyptian exhibitions, the exhibition "Discoveries from the Tomb of Pharaoh AMENHOTEP II" is the most significant.
  • The founder of the museum was Lajoš Kossuth.

Reduced ticket price 6.5 € - for students up to 26 years of age, for pensioners
Free entry for children up to 6 years old and over 70 years old
