The Vasa Museum is located on Djurgården island and, on the way to the museum, it will be clear to you that judging by its exterior, it is a maritime museum. Entering the museum, you will come across the old ship “Vasa” from the 17th century. It sunk on its first voyage in 1628, and it was salvaged in the 1960s. It was exhibited in the temporary Wasavarvet Museum for a period of time. After some time, there was a competition with 384 applications regarding the exterior design of new museum. Swedish architects Marianne Dahlback and Goran Mansson stood out and won the competition with their “Ask” design. The construction began on 2 November, 1987.
Skansen is an authentic museum where Swedish history lives on. It is one of the museums that is supposed to be on your “What to visit in Stockholm” list is the open-air museum – Skansen. This is the world’s oldest museum, opened in 1891, and it is located in Djurgården. The museum will introduce to the history and architecture of Sweden, Swedish lifestyle, their culture and tradition. You will get a full impression of the Swedish people and their lifestyle throughout history. It expands on 300.000 m2.
Another museum that will bring you closer to Swedish history, from the Stone Age to the Viking age, is the History Museum. It is one of the largest museums in Sweden, founded in 1866. There you will see the biggest exhibition of Viking items. There are over 10 million exhibits that tell the story about the Swedes throughout history. Swedish most lavish jewelry, both golden and silver, Medieval art, and unique records from one of the most violent battles of Swedish history, the Battle of Visby – everything is there. Fifty kilograms of golden and 250 grams of silver items are in the museum.
You should not miss Mamma Mia! Have you ever imagined to be a part of the legendary music group ABBA for a day!? ABBA the Musem offers an unforgettable show adventure with ABBA avatars and the experience of ABBA’s music career that marked the 70s and 80s. ABBA the Musem was opened in May of 2013, and it is located in Djurgården (20 minutes from downtown). It was inspired by the Beatles museum in Liverpool. This interactive museum devoted to the Swedish band has 5 floors where music instruments, costumes, records, different props of the group members and photos are exhibited. We warn you that you should not be surprised if an ABBA member calls you when in the museum.
Another unusual and interesting museum located in Djurgården is the Museum of Spirits / Spritmuseum. It is well-known that like to drink alcohol in social gatherings, and the museum is dedicated to all the types of homemade alcohol and products. There you will discover all the tastes of Sweden when it comes to drinks, from beer, vine, snaps, whiskey, liqueur, gin. Exploring the drinking culture will be a lots of fun, and you may sing in groups. The museum has an open courtyard opened only during the season. Accompanying drinks, they offer the summer menu consisting of a small and large plate of traditional food. Of course, there you may have a cup of coffee and grab a typical Swedish pastry.
