Madeira Island:

Cathedral of Funchal

Cathedral of Funchal

Is a beautiful gothic church built at the era of the colonization of the island. It is one of the oldest buildings on the island of Madeira that has been little changed and modified, which is why it is one of the main attractions of the city.

In the center of the city of Funchal there is the Cathedral of Funchal named Cathedral of our Lady of the Assumption. The fact that this cathedral was built in the late 15th (beginning of 16th) century makes it one of the main tourist attractions of the city.
Madeira archipelago was only discovered in 1419 and slowly populated by first settlers in the years that followed. It means that this cathedral stands on the same grounds practically from the beginning of human activity on the island.
In 1490, the first architects were sent by Manuel I (the King of Portugal) to Funchal with the aim of designing and building Funchal’s Cathedral. Even though the cathedral was finished in 1514, starting from 1508 the mass started being organized in the church.

The entrance to the Cathedral is free of charge.
