The Albertina Museum is one of the most frequently visited museums in Vienna! All art lovers will enjoy the collections that are exhibited in it. This museum is located in the Albrechta palace, close to the Viennese opera and the renowned “Sacher” hotel. The biggest collection of drawings (65000) and more than a million graphics are kept in this museum. Duke Casimir Albert gathered a huge collection of graphics and drawings, which are the main exhibits of the Albertina. For the public, this museum was first opened in 1822 after Duke Albert’s death, and it was founded in 1795.
There is also here a collection of books from the Royal court library. The museum was closed because of the renovations in the period between 1996 and 2003. Although the renovations should have been done by 2002, it was prolonged because they found a Roman cemetery under the museum, more than 130 tombs.
The interior of the museum seems rich because of its floor and red tapestry. When visiting the museum, you will see a museum hall, a tea salon, a writing room, a Rococo room, a Spanish suite and other rooms as well that will impress you.
Although these institutions were famous for the fact that only members of high class could visit them, i.e. “blue blood”, the Albertina had a different rule. All people who had their own shoes were allowed to visit it. Other works that embellish this museum are works of Michelangelo, Goya, Picasso, Leonardo da Vinci and Klimt. The exterior of the museum is another work of art of wonderful Viennese architecture.
