Vienna:

The Beethoven Museum

The Beethoven Museum

All classical music lovers will enjoy the museum which is dedicated to the musical giant Beethoven. The first association of Vienna is Beethoven, when he came in 1787 in this Austrian capital to study at Mozart’s. In 1792, Vienna became his home. Although three flats in Vienna were related to him, a museum dedicated solely to him didn’t exist. However, a flat in Heiligenstadt was expanded and converted into a museum in Beethoven’s honour and the honour of his works that he created in his life.In 1802, Beethoven wrote a letter “The Heiligenstadt Testament” to his brother in this flat where he said that he was sad and desperate for having lost his hearing.

However, he never sent the letter. At this point, he worked on the Second Symphony and on the initial parts of the Third Symphony. Beethoven stayed in this flat every time he came to Vienna. In this flat, he also tried to find a cure for his loss of hearing. His works, objects he used and stories about his lifestyle are exhibited in the museum.

Instruments, handwritings, his piano, busts, paintings, furniture, letters and other collections and showpieces that are connected to Beethoven’s life are exhibited there, what gives you the full picture of the life of one of the greatest composer of all time.

Around 750,000 euros were invested for the renovation and expansion of the museum. This project was done in coordination with the Vienna City Museum and other cultural institutions.
