On this page visitors will find the general information about Egypt. We included the general information page for this destination so that our visitors can inform themselves about the visa process for entering the country, what to buy in Egypt, what to wear in Egypt, cigarette prices, internet and SIM cards etc.
Even though there is no dress code in Egypt for tourists, one should know Egyptian men and women, Muslims and Christians, dress rather conservatively. You may notice men wearing shirts, long trousers, and shoes. They generally avoid wearing shorts and T-shirts. When it comes to Egyptian women, some of them might wear clothes which completely cover them, but in most cases, only their hair is covered. This doesn’t mean that visitors cannot wear shorts. In the tourist regions, on the beach or in the hotel it is acceptable to wear shorts and T-shirts, as well as a pareo over a bathing suit. In public places, museums or mosques, one should be more covered.
Visitors that need a visa for Egypt have 2 possibilities: to get their visa online or directly at the airport in Egypt. We would advise our visitors to get their visas online as the procedure is quite simple and they will get their visa emailed within a week or two (in some cases even within two days, depending on the number of requests). Visitors should visit the following website:
Cigarette prices vary from place to place. If our visitors decide to purchase cigarettes at their seaside hotel, they will encounter quite high prices. A pack of cigarettes will cost approximately 85 EGP. Visitors should pay attention to the fact that in most shops outside of their hotel there are no price labels on any products. This applies to cigarettes as well. The normal cigarette price would be 50 EGP for a pack of Camel, Marlboro, etc. These are the prices you can find in the shops that are located outside of your hotels (usually found near them).
There are three main operators in Egypt: Vodafone, Orange, and Etisalat. Egypt’s operators offer good roaming rates and prepaid credit, which allows users to take advantage of cheap local offers and deals. We understand that most visitors are mainly interested in internet packages so we will make a price list of what we consider to be the best prepaid offers. Please pay attention as the offers may change from time to time. There is a tourist SIM which can be purchased for 20 EGP. You may add the following internet packages to this card which are valid for 30 days:
It is almost inconceivable that someone can return from their trip to Egypt with empty hands. But we are always in a dilemma, what should we buy? First, we would advise you to visit small craft shops or even small factories that your tour guides can take you to, where you can take a look at hand-crafted objects. You will be surprised by the precision of the details. Here you will be able to choose statuettes and vases mostly made with alabaster, copper, brass and silver. There is a small factory near Luxor where visitors can find all sorts of souvenirs at truly affordable prices and amazing quality.
