Even though all of Budapest’s landmarks can easily be reached on foot, it is important to note that the capital has a great public transport system. The most widely used mode of transport is surely the metro, with the 4 metro lines in total that reach all parts of the city being M1, M2, M3 and M4.
When it comes to tickets, you can buy an individual ticket, a 24hr ticket, or a 7-day pass. The latter option is the best option if you want to visit the entire city using the metro.
An individual ticket costs 350HUF, which is around €1. If you buy the ticket from the driver, it costs around 450HUF, which is around €1.25. Every time you board a metro, you would have to buy a new ticket. Transfers using the same ticket are only allowed if you use the metro. When it comes to transfers in other modes of transport, like between trams, from a tram to a bus, or between buses, a new ticket is required for each new transfer.
You can also buy 10 individual tickets for around 3000HUF, or around €8.5.
