Cetinje:

The Eagle's Rock

The Eagle's Rock

The Eagle's Rock or the Orlov Krš is located on a hill above Cetinje, near the Cetinje Monastery and is a mausoleum of Danilo Petrović, the founder of the famous Petrović dynasty. The Mausoleum was erected on the 200th anniversary of the founding of the Petrović-Njegoš lineiage and was built based on a design idea of Jelena, the daughter of King Nikola I.

The resting place of Danilo Petrović symbolically enables him to watch over Cetinje and the whole area around Lovćen. The sarcophagus contains inscriptions of symbols that represent Vladika Danilo’s stately and spiritual government, as well as decorative elements, a cross, a circle and a flower. In the etched circular medallion, onlookers can witness the profile of Vladika Danilo, who was also a Metropolitan bishop, like most men from the Petrović dynasty.

Litterally translated, the name Orlov Krš means “Eagle’s Stone“. The entrance to the area is free of charge, and it provides a unique view of Cetinje.
