The Royal Theatre

The Royal Theatre

The Montenegrin Royal Theater Zetski Dom was established in 1884, and is the oldest working theater in the country. It was opened during the reign of the Petrović royal family, and this theater enabled Montenegrins to attend plays for the first time in their country. The Petrović family is famous for its contribution to the modernization of Montenegro.

In 1888, the first play was acted out in Zetski Dom, with many more coming after it. In 1910, the play “Balkanska Carica“, written based on a text by King Nikola I Petrović, was acted out under the roof of Zetski Dom, with the roles acted out by professors from the Cetinje Gymnasium.

During World War One, the building was severely damaged. The renovated Zetski Dom is now a popular venue for concerts.
