Sights of Herceg Novi

Herceg Novi is a city made of rocks, a city of the sea, walls and towers, a city of sun and flower gardens. Herceg Novi is located at the entrance to Boka Kotorska, 51 km from Dubrovnik and 43 km from Kotor. One of the sunniest cities in the Adriatic coast, this city welcomes guests who "sail" into the Bay of Boka Kotorska.


Mamula Fort

Mamula Fort

Mamula fortress is located on the island of Lastavica, just before the entrance to the Bay of Kotor and Herceg Novi. The island is 3.4 nautical miles away from Herceg Novi itself. In the mid-19th century, Lazar Mamula, an Austrian general built a defensive fortress on this island, which got its name because its shape resembles a swallow. Nobody could foresee what a notorious place the fortress would become. The Austrians never used the military potential of the fortress, which became an Italian concentration camp during World War Two.

The Sea Fortress

The Sea Fortress

Forte Mare, translated as “The fortress of the sea” is located adjacent to the Škver pier, on the sea shore. The fortress can be reached by walking down the steps going from the main square to the sea. The fortress was built in the 14th century as a defensive fortress if the city were to be attacked from the sea. It is thought that the cornerstone of the fortress was laid by King Tvrtko of Bosnia, and the fortress used to contain a special place where ships could be anchored to the shore. During the reign of both the Ottomans and Venetians, the fortress took on the name of Abaspaša Kula, meaning “The Mighty Fortress”.

Pet Danica Walkway

Pet Danica Walkway

The Pet Danica Walkway is the longest shore walkway in the city, with its six kilometers connecting Meljine to Igalo, between which Herceg Novi is situated. The walkway got its name after five women who died durin World War Two, all of whom were named Danica. A portion of the old Zelenika-Sarajevo train line passed through this walkway, and one train car of the once-famous train, Ćira, can still be seen in Zelenika. Apart from the fact that it stretches along the sea shore, the walkway enables you to visit numerous sandy and concrete beaches, cafes, beach-restaurants, taverns, souvenir stores.

Tito's Villa

Tito's Villa

The former president of Yugoslavia, Josip Broz Tito, owned tens of vacation houses and villas for leisure and vacation in all parts of the former country, and Herceg Novi, or, rather, Igalo, was no exception. The villa is located close to the Institute for Cardiovascular Disease Treatment “Dr. Simo Milošević”. Tito used this villa, which was named “Galeb”, as a summer residence. It was built in 1976 and was last visited by Tito on the 25th of January 1977. He spent time in the villa on four separate occasions with his wife Jovanka, spending between 5 and 10 weeks at a time, and taking in many visitors and aids.

The City Museum

The City Museum

The City Museum of Herceg Novi is located in Mirka Monenića Street 9, namely very close to the historical part of Herceg Novi and Njegoševa Street, the main walkway of the city. The house is the endowment of Mirko Komnenić, who donated the house to the city after his death in 1940, asking in his will for it to be turned into a museum. Mirko Komnenić was born in Herceg Novi in 1870. He attended school in Slovenia and Switzerland. Komnenić founded the Serbian Creditor’s Guild in Herceg Novi, but he also conducted propaganda and intelligence work for Serbia and Montenegro against Austria-Hungary.
