Forte Mare, translated as “The fortress of the sea” is located adjacent to the Škver pier, on the sea shore. The fortress can be reached by walking down the steps going from the main square to the sea.
The fortress was built in the 14th century as a defensive fortress if the city were to be attacked from the sea. It is thought that the cornerstone of the fortress was laid by King Tvrtko of Bosnia, and the fortress used to contain a special place where ships could be anchored to the shore. During the reign of both the Ottomans and Venetians, the fortress took on the name of Abaspaša Kula, meaning “The Mighty Fortress” and the fortress does good on its name even today, as even though it no longer serves a defensive function, its walls radiate a sense of strength and security. In the 19th century, the Austrians renovated the fortress, and that is when it first got the appearance we can still see today. With its many steps and secret passageways, the fortress was used for civilian purposes up until the 1954, when it was turned into an open theater that hosts many plays and many themed concerts of international music.
The entrance fee to the fortress costs €1.
