One of the most famous touristic attractions of Lisbon is located near the river Tagus – Jeronimos Monastery. Construction began on January 6, 1501, and was completed in the 17th century. The monastery was designed by the Portuguese architect Diogo de Boitaca, and was built on the site of the chapel where Vasco da Gama and his crew prayed before the trip to India. The monastery is a symbol of remembrance of the journey of Vasco da Gama.
Here is the tomb of Vasco da Gama, located inside the monastery, next to the entrance. In addition to his tomb, here is the tomb of the poet Luis de Camoes, author of the epic The Lusiads dedicated to Vasco da Gama. In addition to their graves, in the Jeronimos Monastery there are also graves of historical figures of Portugal. The Jeronimos Monastery was a monastery inhabited by monks from the order of St. Jerome, and they directed their prayers to sailors and royal souls. Very beautiful architecture, made in the style of late Portuguese Gothic, is one of the most prominent buildings in Lisbon. This architectural direction is also known as "Manueline", which represents discoveries from a period that were transferred to architecture.
Naval motifs were made at the Jeronimos Monastery, so you can see ropes, sea monsters, and everything that characterizes that time, and that concerns the exploration of the sea.
The church is impressive inside, with a lot of rich reliefs. In front of it is a garden built in 1940 with a fountain that is often lit during some significant events. The garden consists of the coats of arms of the municipalities of Portugal, which are made of hedges. In 1983, the monastery was included on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
