Modern Art Gallery

The Modern Gallery was founded in 1948 in Ljubljana and was considered the central institution of modern and contemporary art. As of November 26, 2011, this institution of national importance consists of two places. The Modern Gallery MG and the Museum of Contemporary Art Metelkova MSUM, which were opened in new premises, in the former space of the Yugoslav People's Army JNA.

With very beautiful exterior, Modern Gallery/Museum of Modern Art and Museum of Contemporary Art Metelkova has the abbreviation MG + MSUM or Modern Gallery + Museum of Contemporary Art. The Archive of Modern Art Ljubljana plus the Metelkova Museum of Contemporary Art was founded by Ljerka Menaše and Eva Gspan with the goal of collecting data on exhibitions in Slovenia, but also to collect information about Slovenian artists in the world.

The Museum of Modern Art is designed to emphasize the art of the 20th  century and contemporary works in order to spread modern ideas. Its renovated space is next to Tivoli Park. The exterior of the museum is unusual, eye-catching and calling for a tour. Permanent exhibitions are collections of XX century Slovenian art. Temporary exhibitions and various projects are regularly organized. Workshops and conferences organized by the Modern Gallery or some other organizers are organized in the space of the Museum of Modern Art. The modern gallery stores photographs of the Museum of Contemporary Art, and the Museum of Contemporary Art has a library with a very rich archive of art.

The Museum of Contemporary Art has also opened in the renovated buildings of the former military barracks in Metelkova Street, where the Ethnographic Museum and the National Museum are located. Also, this district is known as a museum district. The permanent exhibition "Present Presence" was presented in the museum, with certain works from the collection of Eastern European art "Arteast 2000+" and "Museum of Affects" with works from the collections of museums from Ljubljana, Barcelona, ​​Eindhoven and Antwerp.

There is a space intended for the EVR e-flux video rental project on the ground floor of the museum, and it represents an archive of video recordings, a space for projections and free video rental.

The regular ticket price is € 5.00
If you want to visit the museum, you can buy a combined ticket that costs 7.50 €.

Opening hours of the modern gallery
The modern gallery is open from Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 18:00
The Coffe Shop located in the complex is open from Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 21:00, on Fridays until 22:00
