Barcelona:

Plaza España

Plaza España

Placa d’Espanya is positioned at the foot of Montjuic mountain, and it is one of the most significant squares in Barcelona. This square is the junction of a couple of main streets, such as: Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes, Avinguda del Paral, Carrer de la Creu Coberta and Carrer de Tarragona, and it stretches to Palau Nacional through Avinguda de la Reina Maria Cristina, where one of the best Catalan musems, the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya (MNAC), is located. At the center of the square there is a big fountain designed by Josep Maria Jujol. On the fountain, there are ancient deities and heroes designed by Miquel Blay.

The most popular attraction on the square is the Magic Fountain of Montjuic that offers a vivid display of water, music and colours with an emblematic representation of the National Art Museum of Catalonia.

Another attraction that you may visit there is Pabellon de Barcelona – this small building, designed by the renowned Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, served as the venue for the the 1929 International Exposition in Barcelona. In a short period of time, it became a synonym for the international style, a trend set during the 20th century. This is a symbolic example in world’s architecture.

Third most popular attraction on the square is the Arena. After decades of decay, the old arena was turned into a modern shopping mall – Arenas de Barcelona, but it kept its original façade. It is a home to the most prestigious international brands, cinemas and restaurants. We recommend you must not miss the terrace that offers a beautiful view of the square.
