The beautiful Almudena Cathedral is a building dedicated to the Mother of God, in Madrid they say to the Virgin of Almudena. It is very visited and recognizable and represents the Catholic Church. Its construction is interesting because it has a relatively "young history". When we listen to stories about cathedrals, we somehow imagine that they were all built in a certain century, but Alumudena Cathedral is specific in its year of construction, i.e. completion. It is classified as a very young cathedral, completed only in 1993.
In the 16th century, King Philip II wanted to build a cathedral, but he could not succeed, because the then seat of the Archdiocese of Madrid was in the city of Toledo. It was not until the 19th century that the city received permission from the then more powerful Toledo to build a cathedral and dedicate it to the Virgin of Almudena, and it was not until 1883 that this cathedral began to be built. The ancient wish and idea of Philip II came true. Among other things, the time of the wars slowed down the construction, which is why it was completed so "late".
This cathedral was built in the neoclassical style with parts of Gothic, because they wanted the cathedral to be coordinated with the Royal Palace when it comes to style of construction. The cathedral was consecrated by Pope John Paul II. There is a museum in the cathedral, and a visit to the large dome is allowed, from which visitors enjoy the magnificent view.
