The Saint Anne Square

The Saint Anne Square

Saint Anne Square - In the central part of Madrid, near important landmarks such as the Puerta del Sol, there is a paved bright square called Saint Anne Square. This part of Madrid is called Barrio de las Letras. There are two significant monuments on the square. One is dedicated to the Spanish writer Pedro Calderon, and the other to the playwright Federico Garcia. Most of the square is occupied by tapas bars, cafes and restaurants. There is the oldest theater in Madrid on the square - the Spanish Theater in a building from the XVII century. Sometime at the beginning of the 20th century, a hotel was built on the square, which is called "Reina Victoria" today. Toreadors usually stayed in it when it was built, which is why it became and remained popular.

The square was named after the monastery of St. Anne from the 17th century, which is located on the same place as the square. In 1810, Joseph I decided to turn the place into a square, so it was completed in 1880. In addition to being a popular gathering place, it is a favorite place to take a break from the city crowds and drink coffee. Sellers of various interesting souvenirs meet in the square. The square is popular for its good food, nightlife and culture. In this section you can try local food, visit numerous tapa bars and jazz bars. During the winter, heaters are installed in the gardens of the restaurant, so it is a real pleasure to sit on cold terraces even on cold days. In addition, there are two smaller playgrounds for kids, so the square is very suitable for children.

Indeed, this is a square where there is something for everyone, the atmosphere of Madrid is felt in its full spirit. The place is full of tourists and locals. On the roof of the hotel "Reina Victoria" is one of the most popular "rooftop" bars, it is popular for nightlife. There is a beautiful view of the square, Madrid and the unforgettable sunsets from the roof. In the immediate vicinity of the square is the Spanish Parliament, Puerta del Sol, Cafe "Central" - the most popular jazz cafe and a statue of playwright Lorca.
