The pillar of shame is located in front of the old clock, where the old pillar of shame that was destroyed in the earthquake was once located. The pillar of shame was a characteristic way of punishing the one who committed a certain offense in Kotor. The police of the time (Venetian Republic) would place the defendant in front of the pillar of shame (thief, cheat) and so the whole city would know who was the person who had done something wrong. Of course, the pillar of shame is there today only for the sake of remembrance - this type of punishment has long been absent, but this place is one of the favorite among tourists.
