The Water Tower

The Water Tower

The Maribor Water Tower is a medieval stone tower dating back to 1555, built in the late Renaissance style and located along the Drava River. It was built as a fortified tower that protected the city of Maribor from penetration from the river. Before the current tower was built in 1555, there were two other framed towers in this place. One was a Jewish tower and the other a baroque tower. They existed there until 1520.

The Square of Freedom

One of the important squares in Maribor is Liberty Square. The National Liberation monument is located on this square, and the locals call it Kodžak. Here you can enjoy a walk, and you can also sit down in a cafe. City events that should not be missed are often organized on the square, such as fairs, various gatherings, plays, music concerts, parties. We can actually say that the square is always alive. Next to the square is the Maribor Castle, and below the square you can visit the oldest wine cellar in Europe called Vinak. To the north of the square there is a view of the General Maistre square, as well as the city hill, known as a picnic area, called the Pyramid.

The Čelegi Tower

The Čelegi Tower

The Čelegi tower is the only one that has been completely preserved, of the five original towers that are located on the northern parapet wall of the Maribor fortress. It is known as the Black Tower, and it got its name from the famous Maribor brewery Čelegi. The tower was built in the 15th century, more precisely between 1460 and 1465. It is built of stone and has a rectangular - square shape. It was built with modern residential blocks. At the corner of Gregoričeva Street and Gledališka Street, there is the Gambrinus building, which was named after the king of Filandria, Gabrinus, who invented the process of brewing beer, and which is connected to the tower.
