The Main Square

The Main Square

Maribor's main square is the second largest square in the city, and occupies the central place of the Maribor urban zone. This square is very old, it is mentioned as far back as the 14th century, and from then until the 20th century, the square was the main place for selling various products. In the middle of this sunny square is the "Sign of Mary" monument, which symbolizes the end of a great disease - the plague, which reigned in the 17th century. This medieval square was named after the castle in front of which it is located. The castle was built by King Frederick III. The square was called Florian Square at the end of the 17th century.
