Maribor:

The Maribor Castle

The Maribor Castle

One of the most visited sights of Maribor is the Maribor Castle, which is located in the center of the city. It is surrounded by the main squares, and its architecture delights all passers-by. Within the castle is the Provincial Museum, which contains the imperial collections, archaeological, ethnographic, cultural and historical. The castle was built by Emperor Frederick III between 1478 and 1483. Several styles can be seen in the castle, but mostly it is a mixture of Renaissance and Baroque. It used to belong to wealthy, noble families, but since the castle required large investments, the city took it over during the 19th century.

How attractive and worthy of attention the castle is, is also shown by the fact that some important people visited the Maribor Castle, such as Emperor Leopold I, Empress Maria Theresa, composer Franz Liszt, and during the Second World War Adolf Hitler also visited the castle - in the time when Maribor was under German rule.

The castle boasts a main room with a very beautiful interior, with special emphasis on the ceiling and paintings that adorn the walls of the castle. This room is a ceremonial hall and is located on the first floor. The pictures are the work of Jožef Gebler. Perhaps this castle is not as well known in the world as the others, but it is worth visiting because it is a cultural treasure of Slovenia.
